Thanksgiving Prescription Refill Checklist for Staten Island

Before Thanksgiving travel, count your remaining doses and check whether each prescription will last through your return. Contact your pharmacy before you run low: a refill request, an insurance approval, and a prescription ready for pickup are three different steps.

1. Check your supply against your travel dates

Make a list of each prescription, its strength, the directions on the label, the amount remaining, and your departure and return dates. Include medicines you use only when needed and any supplies required to take your medication.

For a medicine taken on a fixed daily schedule, divide the quantity remaining by the amount prescribed each day. For example, 18 tablets at two tablets daily is nine days of medicine—not 18. If your dose varies, ask the pharmacist to help check your supply rather than using that calculation.

The CDC’s travel guidance recommends enough medicine for the entire trip plus extra for unexpected delays. Ask what additional supply is legally and practically available for your prescriptions; do not assume an early fill is guaranteed.

2. Ask what must happen before a refill is ready

Contact the pharmacy as soon as you identify a possible gap. Have the prescription number, medicine name, remaining supply, and travel dates available. Ask:

  • Are refills remaining? If not, does the prescriber need to issue a new prescription?
  • When is the next fill allowed? If you leave before that date, ask whether an early-fill request or vacation override is an option under your plan.
  • Is another approval needed? Ask whether insurance or prescriber action is outstanding.
  • When can I collect it? Confirm that the medication is ready before traveling to the pharmacy.

Insurance rules, prescription requirements, medication availability, and controlled-substance restrictions can affect what is possible. An early refill or vacation override is not an automatic entitlement. Do not reduce, skip, or change doses to stretch your supply; contact your pharmacist or prescriber for instructions if you may run out.

3. Confirm Thanksgiving hours instead of assuming

Check both the pharmacy’s holiday schedule and your prescriber’s office availability. Regular weekly hours do not establish Thanksgiving hours, and a submitted request does not confirm that a prescription has been filled.

Eltingville Pharmacy is at 3948 Richmond Ave, Staten Island, NY 10312. Call (718) 356-1789 to confirm holiday hours and that your prescription is ready before visiting.

4. Pack medicines for safe travel and storage

  • Keep original labeled containers. Carry a current medication list and your prescriber’s and pharmacy’s phone numbers.
  • Use carry-on luggage when flying. The CDC recommends carrying medications in hand luggage rather than checked baggage.
  • Follow the specific storage instructions. Ask about temperature limits and refrigeration before departure. Do not assume every medicine should go in a cooler.
  • Avoid the car’s glove compartment. MedlinePlus warns that medicines can get too hot, cold, or wet there.
  • Secure medicines at your destination. Keep them out of children’s sight and reach, not in an accessible purse, suitcase, or bedside bag.

If you cross time zones, get medication-specific dosing advice before leaving. For international trips, check the destination country’s medication restrictions with its embassy or consulate; a valid U.S. prescription does not establish that a medicine can be brought into another country.

What if you run out while away from Staten Island?

Contact your pharmacist and prescriber promptly. Tell them your location, the medicine and strength, when you last took it, and whether any doses remain. Ask what lawful refill or transfer options apply; some prescriptions cannot be transferred or refilled in the same way as others.

Do not borrow someone else’s medicine or take a replacement dose without instructions. If you have severe symptoms or a medical emergency, seek urgent care rather than waiting for a routine refill response.
