Medicare Part D Open Enrollment 2026: A Staten Island Checklist

Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15–December 7, 2026, for coverage starting January 1, 2027. Before choosing a drug plan, check your actual prescriptions, your pharmacy, and the estimated yearly cost—not just the monthly premium.

Which Medicare deadline applies this November?

For annual Open Enrollment, the plan must receive your enrollment request by December 7, 2026. Changes take effect January 1, 2027. This is the fall review period for Medicare health and drug coverage, not the same as your initial Medicare enrollment period.

If you use Original Medicare, you can compare separate Part D drug plans. If you have Medicare Advantage with drug coverage, review the whole plan, including your doctors and hospitals. Do not switch based on prescription prices alone or assume that adding a separate drug plan will leave your existing coverage unchanged.

Gather these details before comparing 2027 plans

  • Your current medication list: exact drug names, strengths, dosage forms, how often you take them, and the quantity you normally fill. A tablet and a capsule, or two different strengths, may produce different results.
  • Your pharmacy preferences: include the pharmacy you actually want to use and any pharmacy you may need while away from Staten Island.
  • Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change: review next year’s changes to costs, benefits, and coverage even if your medicines have not changed.
  • Your ZIP code: use your home ZIP code in the official comparison tool so you see plans available where you live.

Enter those details in Medicare Plan Finder and select coverage for 2027. Compare the estimated total annual cost, including premiums and prescription costs, rather than choosing the lowest premium automatically.

Check each medicine and the pharmacy network

A formulary is a plan’s covered-drug list. Check every prescription against the plan’s 2027 formulary and look for coverage rules such as prior authorization, step therapy, or quantity limits. A medicine being listed does not necessarily mean it can be filled without additional steps.

Then confirm the pharmacy’s status for the exact plan and year. Being in-network and having preferred cost sharing are not the same thing. Do not assume that a pharmacy’s participation in one insurer’s plan applies to every plan that insurer offers, or that 2026 participation guarantees 2027 participation.

To check Eltingville Pharmacy, use 3948 Richmond Ave, Staten Island, NY 10312 in the plan’s pharmacy directory. Confirm the listing with the plan and contact the pharmacy before relying on it. This article does not certify participation in any particular 2027 plan.

Where Staten Island residents can get unbiased help

For plan-selection counseling, contact New York’s Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) at 1-800-701-0501. The state describes this as free, objective assistance; its helpline routes callers to their local program.

You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). If you have employer, union, or other health coverage, ask its benefits administrator how a change would affect that coverage before enrolling.

For prescription questions, contact Eltingville Pharmacy. For personalized insurance counseling and help choosing a plan, use Medicare or HIICAP.
