How to Complete Your NY Driver’s License Renewal Vision Requirement

Renewing your New York driver’s license involves more than taking a vision test. Here is how to arrange the screening, get your results to DMV, and finish your renewal—with practical planning tips for Eltingville and Staten Island residents.

DMV eye tests in Eltingville

The process at a glance

  1. Check your renewal eligibility and arrange a test with an authorized provider or at a DMV office.
  2. Bring your license and the glasses or contact lenses you use for driving.
  3. Pass the screening and confirm whether results will be submitted electronically or recorded on an MV-619 report.
  4. Complete the separate DMV renewal transaction and pay the renewal fee.

New York requires a passing vision test for license renewal. DMV’s basic standard is visual acuity of at least 20/40 in either or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses. A renewal screening is not a replacement for a comprehensive eye examination.

1. Choose an authorized vision test provider

You can take the vision test at a DMV office, use a provider enrolled in the DMV Online Vision Registry, or have a qualified medical or vision care professional complete a Vision Test Report (MV-619, PDF).

DMV lists physicians, physician assistants, ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, registered nurses, and nurse professionals as authorized professionals for an MV-619 report. Pharmacists and their supervised staff can conduct DMV vision screening through enrollment in the Vision Registry. Being a pharmacy does not, by itself, establish enrollment.

Use DMV’s Vision Registry Locator to find an enrolled provider by city or ZIP code. Before scheduling, confirm that the provider performs the test you need, how it will submit your results, and the fee. Provider screening fees vary and are not set by DMV.

Eltingville Pharmacy is listed in the official DMV Vision Registry Locator results for ZIP code 10312 at 3948 Richmond Ave, Staten Island. Review our DMV eye test service and call before traveling to confirm current availability, the fee, and when your results will be available to DMV.

2. Bring your license and corrective lenses

  • Your New York driver’s license. The provider will need accurate identifying information to report the result.
  • Your driving glasses or contact lenses. Wear them for the screening if you need them to meet the vision standard.
  • Your renewal notice, if you have it. Keep it handy for the DMV renewal step.
  • An MV-619 form, if your provider requests one. Ask beforehand whether the provider supplies it or uses electronic reporting instead.

If you need corrective lenses to pass, DMV places a “B” corrective-lenses restriction on your license. Do not assume that renewing automatically removes an existing restriction; follow DMV’s vision and restriction instructions if you want it removed.

If you cannot pass the basic screening, consult an eye care professional about the next steps. Some vision conditions require DMV medical review and a different form rather than the standard MV-619.

3. Confirm how your results reach DMV

Electronic submission through the Vision Registry

An enrolled provider submits your results directly to DMV. DMV requires registry providers to enter results within 24 hours of the test. Ask the provider to confirm submission before starting your renewal; taking the test does not mean the result is already available in DMV’s system.

Once the result is submitted, you can renew online without manually entering the vision report information. For a mail renewal, you do not need to include an MV-619 when an enrolled provider has submitted your passing results electronically.

A completed MV-619 Vision Test Report

If you use the report route, the authorized professional must complete the MV-619 in English. Check that your information and the test details are complete, and keep the report for the renewal transaction.

  • Renewing online: enter the report information when DMV asks for it. DMV says you do not need to mail or bring in the report for an online renewal.
  • Renewing by mail: include the completed report with your renewal paperwork unless your results were submitted through the registry.
  • Renewing at a DMV office: bring your completed report, use results already submitted through the registry, or take the vision test there.

Vision results generally expire 12 months after the test. An optometrist or ophthalmologist may determine that a result is valid for only six months. Make sure the result remains valid when you renew.

4. Finish your driver’s license renewal with DMV

A passing test or an electronic submission does not renew your license. After completing the vision requirement, follow DMV’s Renew a Driver License instructions to submit the renewal and pay the applicable fee. The DMV renewal fee is separate from any provider’s screening fee.

Eligible drivers can renew online or by mail while keeping their current document type. Some renewals require a DMV office visit, including upgrading a Standard license to REAL ID or Enhanced, changing your photo, and commercial driver’s license renewals. Check DMV’s instructions for your situation before choosing a renewal method.

This guide covers the ordinary renewal vision requirement, not commercial-driver medical certification or a comprehensive medical evaluation. If you hold a CDL or have a medical-review requirement, consult DMV’s specific instructions.

Plan ahead of your expiration date. Completing a vision test alone does not extend an expired license or authorize you to drive.
